VISIT: Rievalux

Last month we drove up into the Yorkshire Moors and visited Helmsley. We like Helmsley a lot - especially the Walled Garden. But this time we decided to find a different view of the town.

Our neighbours are keen walkers, with the elder gentleman actually being a walk leader for the town we live in. He mentioned a few months back that they were walking along the Cleveland way (albeit along a piece in the Dales rather than the Moors) and it stuck with me. I discovered it passes through Helmsley and there's a nice trek across countryside to Rievaulx Abbey.

Rievaulx is in a superb location - nestled in a valley so it's massiveness is sort of hidden until you stumble over it. We got there about 3pm so the afternoon sun was filtering down straight onto it and there wasn't many people there either.

There's quite a substantial amount of the abbey left and with the free audio tour, we spend a couple of hours wandering around and learning about how and why the abbey was created, how the people lived and why it fell into ruin.

I would fully recommend visiting the abbey and if you can, walking to it from Helmsley because it made the trip even more interesting.
